The phoebes are back already!

Spring beauties

I’m not quite sure why I’ve never cut daffodils for the house until today. They’ve been there, by the side of the road, for 10 years. But on this cold and rainy day, I’m glad they’re where I can see them. Plus, the light, buttery colored ones have a nice fragrance. I think I knew that when I bought the bulbs, but had quite forgotten over the years.

Spring planting has finally started

Planted today:

Spinach: Space

Lettuce: Black Seeded Simpson, Merlot, Revolution, Green Ice

Peas: Sugar Snap

Radishes: Plum Purple, Cherry Belle

Egret in the Snow

I’ll bet he wished he waited a few days before getting back to Minnesota.

Ice Out 2011

We were out of town this weekend, so I’m not quite sure if the ice went out on Saturday or Sunday, but I’m going to call it: Sunday, April 9 is the official pond ice out date for 2011. Here are some past dates for ice out: April 15, 2008March 27, 2007April 5, 2006.

Ice Out: April 9, 2011

The First Seedling of 2011

Here it is, an Ancho Magnifico pepper seedling, finally pushing through the soil. I planted these on 3/21/, so it’s taken 12 days for germination. I was starting to get a bit worried, but no need – seeds just know what they have to do – reach toward the light.

Seed Starting: Peppers, 2011

With this flat of peppers, the 2011 seed starting season has begun.

It’s 18 pots of peppers – 9 of Hungarian Hot Wax (from Fedco) and 9 of Ancho Magnifico (from Territorial).

Of course, Mr. Nosy (aka, Brix) had to get in on the action.

Winter Sowing, 2011

The 2011 planting season has begun!

This year I’m trying something new (for me) – winter sowing. I’ve planted plastic containers with seeds and put them out in the snow, ready to germinate when the seeds decide it’s time.

The two large containers have spinach and lettuce; the other six, smaller containers have various flowers, both annuals and perennials. I’m really hopeful that everything will thrive. If the greens work out, we’ll have some early, fresh salads. If the flowers do well, then I’ll save a bunch of money because I won’t be buying as many plants.

  • Spinach container: Tyee & Space
  • Lettuce container: Black Seeded Simpson & Red Salad Bowl
  • Munstead Lavender
  • Munstead Lavendar & Goblin Gaillardia
  • Only the Lonely Nicotiana & Butterfly Flower (Asclepias tuberosa)
  • Garlic Chives & Black Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)
  • Kiss-Me-Over-the-Garden-Gate & Lavender Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum)
  • Victoria Rhubarb & Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea)

Seeds are here!

I’ve just spent a wonderful 2 hours going through all my seeds for 2011, dividing them into planting categories.

I think I’m going to go to Goodwill tomorrow to look for plastic storage containers – for winter sowing. I’ve never done it before, but I know I ordered more than will fit in my seed-starting area.

I’m really looking forward to gardening this year.

Summer Vacation

I know, I know – it’s been almost a year and no posts. I can’t really explain except to say that life has been keeping me busy, and it’s just going to get busier. So, I think I’ll allow myself a summer vacation from the blog, coming back next fall fresher and ready to write again.

Have a great growing season!
